Car Accidents: Causes, Types, Impacts, and 13 Ways to Reduce Risk

Driving carefully and according to the rules is obviously a basic thing for everyone. But, the risk of a car accident is always there, and it must be realized from the moment before you are behind the wheel.

In general, the understanding of car accidents can refer to Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation or commonly known as the LLAJ Law.

In the regulation, a car accident is defined as an event on the road that is unforeseen and unintentional involving a vehicle with or without other road users that results in human casualties and/or property loss.

So, if it meets these criteria, an incident can be referred to as a car accident.

Mapping the Causes

Looking at data owned by the National Police Traffic Corps, throughout the period from January 2022 to September 2022, there were 94,617 cases of traffic accidents in Indonesia.

This number has increased by more than 1/3 when compared to 2021 for the same period.

Accidents do not occur by themselves but can be triggered by several factors and causes.

1. Human Factor

Human factors will include behavior on the road, driving skills, physical condition, and the mental state of the driver when driving the car.

The risk of accidents increases when the driver is drunk, drowsy, stressed, violating traffic signs, using a mobile phone, and not wearing a seatbelt.

2. Vehicle Factor

Vehicle factors are the cause of the increased risk of the next accident. These technical factors can include malfunctioning brakes, bald tires, dead lights, engine problems, and so on.

Basically, the condition of a vehicle that is not in prime condition can increase the risk of accidents that threaten safety.

3. Road Factor

The third factor is the road factor. These factors will include street design, construction, maintenance by the authorities, and general street operations that affect their condition.

Road conditions that can trigger accidents such as slippery, deep potholes, damage, less traffic markings, narrow, winding, hilly, and so on.

4. Environmental Factors

The last is the environmental factor. Accidents can occur when the natural and social conditions around the highway have a high risk, thus allowing bad things to happen.

For example, bad weather, noise, pollution, crowds, passing animals, road work, to residential areas with many children.

Of the four causes of accidents, according to data in 2025, human factors are still the main thing that triggers most of the existing car accident incidents.

The figure is not even a joke, around 60% to 80% of accidents that occur are triggered by human error.

Beware of the Most Common Types of Car Accidents

The type of car accident will then depend on the vehicle involved, and the position of the impact experienced.

There are quite a lot of types, but based on data released by the National Criminal Information Center of the National Police, the order of the most types of accidents that occurred in 2022 is as follows:

  • Bullfighting, an accident between the front of one car and the front of another, with a record of more than 13,700 incidents throughout the first half of 2022
  • The collision of the front of the car with the rear of another car, still in the 13,700s, occupied the second position
  • Single accidents are in third place with a total of 12,500 cases or around 19.88% of the total incidents in the period
  • Accidents involving direct collisions with humans are in the next position with a total of about 7,100 cases
  • Of course, the victims who fell cannot be said to be small, both in terms of casualties, injuries, and material losses due to the damage that occurred.

This is why, awareness of the high risk of car accidents on the highway must be realized, not to scare people, but rather to increase awareness so that all drivers are more careful.

Impact of Car Accidents: Safety Risks and Material Losses

When a car accident occurs, there are two main things that will have an impact: the safety of yourself and passengers, and the damage that occurs to the car.

Injuries and Human Safety Risks

The use of seat belts will obviously go a long way in reducing the risk of injury that may arise. However, this does not then negate the threat to safety.

Cars basically have a set of safety features. Some new cars also have airbags on various sides, to reduce collisions with hard objects during crashes.

Some of the safety risks that may arise include the following:

  • Traumatic brain injury, caused by a shock or impact of a hard object on the head that affects a person's brain cells for a while.
  • Neck injury, the shock that occurs can trigger tension in the neck or commonly called whiplash. These injuries can occur due to stretching and tearing in the muscles and tendons in the neck during an accident.
  • Scratch wounds, usually triggered by objects in the car, either blunt objects or sharp objects. There is a possibility that scratches occur because objects from outside the car enter when the impact occurs.
  • Chest injuries, these injuries also include the condition of the breastbone, muscles, lungs, and other parts of the body that are around the ribs. Minor to severe injuries can occur, such as chest pain to fractures or trauma in the body.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder, or commonly referred to as PTSD, is a mental health condition triggered by a terrible, life-threatening event. This is in the form of trauma.
  • Serious injuries to death, serious injuries can occur such as fractures or loss of limbs, to loss of life. This risk increases when safety features in the car are not used, and accidents occur at high speeds or are very severe.

Damage That Occurs After an Accident

After a car accident occurs, damage to the vehicle will also appear. This damage is not only visible directly, such as scratches, broken glass, a broken body, or engine damage, but also damage long after the crash occurs.

Some of the most common post-accident damages include:

  • There is rust on the car because the anti-rust coating is peeled off
  • Crumbling car body
  • The pillars and panels of the car become asymmetrical
  • The joints and gaps between the body and the bumper are damaged
  • Sloping frame and chassis
  • Broken car glass
  • Legs that become asymmetrical
  • Engine damage is so severe that it cannot be repaired

Then how do you reduce the risk?

The risks described above can be reduced in severity with simple steps. This step is quite a lot and not difficult to do, so everyone can practice it.

1. Obey Traffic Signs

Traffic signs are made in such a way as to help highway users to know the risks that exist on the road. By understanding this, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

2. Seat Belts

Seat belts are one of the basic safety tools in every car. This belt is placed in each seat, and serves to hold a person from experiencing an impact or changing positions.

3. Keep a Safe Distance

A safe distance from the vehicle in front and behind you is a way to reduce the risk of the next car accident. This safe distance will give you the time you need to reduce speed and stop.

4. Avoid Using Cell Phones While Driving

Using a smartphone while driving is highly discouraged, as it reduces the focus on road conditions. At a certain speed, losing focus for a few seconds will significantly increase the risk of crashing.

5. Check the Condition of the Vehicle

The risk of accidents also increases when the car's function is not optimal. Basic functions such as gearing, brake and gas, steering wheel, mirrors, ignition and more, must be ensured to always be in good condition to reduce technical risks.

6. Drive at Normal Speed

Not a few fatal accidents occur because someone is driving at high speeds. This can be reduced by driving at the recommended speed. Even though the road is quiet, I still try not to exceed the normal speed.

7. Be Aware of Road and Weather Conditions

Focus on road conditions and weather is the next point. Focusing on road conditions and weather can help map out existing risks, such as slippery roads, overheated asphalt, and the like.

8. Not Driving in a Tired or Under the Influence of Alcohol

Tired physical condition or under the influence of alcohol can also trigger accidents. Slowed response, lost focus, to drowsiness that can eliminate concentration, all these variables can trigger accidents.

9. The Right Vehicle Lights

Vehicle lights have a fundamental function to improve visibility on the highway. Whether for car drivers or for other drivers, lights that function optimally can reduce the risk of accidents.

10. Defensive Driving Skills

Defensive driving skills can be learned so that you are always aware of other drivers' behaviors that may be unsafe.

This ability can be honed, so you have a faster response and much better observation ability to anticipate accidents.

11. Signal Clearly

Providing the right and correct signal is an effective way to reduce the risk of crashes. The right signal can signal to other drivers what you are experiencing or about to do so that it can be well anticipated.

12. Maximize Vehicle Safety System

The safety features in the car should also be maximized. This feature, especially in modern cars, is very complete with the help of advanced sensors that automatically respond to the emergency conditions faced. So, make sure to get to know it well and take advantage of its features.

13. Make Sure You Have Reliable Vehicle Insurance

Vehicle insurance can provide the necessary protection against further losses from a car accident. Of course, this doesn't make you immune to the consequences, but at least it can significantly reduce financial losses due to the crash that occurs.
