Recognize the Meaning of Airplane Delay First

Delay in the world of aviation is defined as a delay in the flight schedule from the original schedule that has been determined. The cause can come from many factors, but most are expressed as technical constraints.

Some of these delays have a clear estimate, while others are uncertain. Because it is the fault of the airline and brings losses to its passengers, there are strict rules regarding the compensation that must be given referring to how long the aircraft delay occurs.

When a delay occurs, you will get information directly from an airline representative or through announcements on screens and loudspeakers.

Mapping the Factors Causing Airplane Delays

Now for the factors themselves as previously stated are quite diverse. Starting from technical problems related to the engine or function of the aircraft, then problems with the cabin crew on duty, or even administrative problems and passenger errors related to the aircraft departure schedule.

But there are at least six common causes that are usually the main reason why airplanes must experience departure delays.

  • First, the weather in the airport area is very bad, such as heavy rain, thunderstorms, or dense fog that can interfere with visibility and flight operations practically. If this is not heeded, the passengers and cabin crew are at greater risk.
  • Second, the aircraft suffers from engine, electrical or other technical problems that make it unable to operate optimally to perform its duties.
  • Third, there is traffic congestion at the airport. This happens quite often at airports with limited runways and cannot accommodate scheduled departures and arrivals of aircraft to and from the airport.
  • Fourth, there is a change or delay from the previous airplane schedule that triggers a domino effect on the flight you are taking.
  • Fifth, there are administrative issues. As mentioned earlier, this problem sometimes arises. Administrative issues can take the form of checking passengers, luggage, or flight documents required by the airline.
  • Sixth, there are security concerns such as bomb threats, or stricter security inspections to ensure the safety of every passenger boarding the flight.

Which of these six causes have you experienced?

3 Types of Delay and the Compensation Passengers Are Entitled to

If referring to the applicable rules, the flight will be said to be delayed if it is more than 30 minutes late. But before getting to the list of compensation that you can get when there is a delay, first understand the three types of delays categorized on the following page jdih.dephub.go,id.

  • Flight delay or with other terms flight delayed.
  • Not transported passengers by reason of aircraft capacity, with the term denied boarding passenger.
  • Flight cancellation with the term cancelation of flight

The delay time itself will be calculated by the formula of the difference between the scheduled departure of the aircraft and the realization when the aircraft leaves the airport apron to the runway to take off.

Compensation to Which Passengers Are Entitled

The compensation that passengers are entitled to will refer to the time of the delay. According to the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 89 of 2015 concerning Delay Management at Scheduled Commercial Air Transport Business Entities in Indonesia, the list is as follows:

  • Delay between 30 to 60 minutes, compensation is soft drinks.
  • Delay between 61 to 120 minutes, compensation is food and soft drinks.
  • Delay between 121 to 180 minutes, compensation is food and heavy drinks.
  • Delay between 181 to 240 minutes, compensation is food and soft drinks plus a heavy meal.
  • Delay of more than 240 minutes, compensation is in the form of cash compensation of Rp300,000 per passenger.

In the event of a flight cancellation, you will be compensated by offering two main alternatives. The first is a full refund of the ticket price purchased or refund, and the second is a transfer to the next flight.
